Kings of War by Mantic Games is a rank-and-file fantasy wargame built around formations. Unlike skirmish games where each model acts independently, Kings of War units move and fight as blocks—and those blocks have specific footprints measured in millimeters. Getting the right base size determines whether your models rank up correctly, fit their movement trays, and meet tournament requirements.
Individual models use 20mm square bases for Infantry (Inf) or 25mm square bases for Heavy Infantry (HI), 25x50mm rectangular bases for cavalry, and 40mm or 50mm square bases for large infantry and large cavalry. The base size is determined by unit type, not faction—a single army often includes both Infantry and Heavy Infantry units. But the real magic of Kings of War is multi-basing—mounting an entire unit on a single base sized to the formation footprint.
LITKO manufactures precision laser-cut individual bases and KoW-specific unit bases in plywood for every standard formation size. If you need a custom dimension, the LITKO BaseMaker tool lets you order any shape and size.

Infantry & Heavy Infantry (20mm & 25mm Bases)
Infantry is the backbone of every Kings of War army. The base size is determined by unit type, not by faction. In the Kings of War rules, Infantry (Inf) is a distinct unit type from Heavy Infantry (HI), and each type has its own base size:
- Infantry (Inf) — uses 20x20mm square bases. Examples: Skeleton Warriors, Goblin Rabble, Militia, Zombies, Levy, Bowmen.
- Heavy Infantry (HI) — uses 25x25mm square bases. Examples: Ironclad (Dwarfs), Paladin Foot Guard (Basileans), Abyssal Guard, Palace Guard (Elves), Ax (Orcs).
A single faction can contain both unit types. For example, Basileans field Militia (Infantry, 20mm) alongside Paladin Foot Guard (Heavy Infantry, 25mm). Always check the unit type listed in your army list entry—it tells you exactly which base size to use. The formation footprints differ based on whether the unit type is Infantry or Heavy Infantry.
Infantry (Inf) — 20mm Formation Sizes
Infantry (Inf) units on 20mm bases rank up 5 models wide and use these formation footprints:
| Unit Size | Models | Footprint (W x D) | LITKO KoW Unit Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Troop | 10 (5 wide x 2 deep) | 100 x 40mm | Shop 100x40mm |
| Regiment | 20 (5 wide x 4 deep) | 100 x 80mm | Shop 100x80mm |
| Horde | 40 (10 wide x 4 deep) | 200 x 80mm | Shop 200x80mm |
| Legion | 60 (10 wide x 6 deep) | 200 x 120mm | Custom via BaseMaker (also as tray) |
Heavy Infantry (HI) — 25mm Formation Sizes
Heavy Infantry (HI) units on 25mm bases also rank up 5 models wide, producing larger formation footprints:
| Unit Size | Models | Footprint (W x D) | LITKO KoW Unit Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Troop | 10 (5 wide x 2 deep) | 125 x 50mm | Shop 125x50mm |
| Regiment | 20 (5 wide x 4 deep) | 125 x 100mm | Shop 125x100mm |
| Horde | 40 (10 wide x 4 deep) | 250 x 100mm | Shop 250x100mm |
| Legion | 60 (10 wide x 6 deep) | 250 x 150mm | Custom via BaseMaker (also as tray) |
Which base size do I use? Check the unit type in your army list entry. If the unit type says Infantry (Inf), use 20mm bases. If it says Heavy Infantry (HI), use 25mm bases. Do not go by faction—many factions contain both Infantry and Heavy Infantry units. The unit profile in the rulebook or the Mantic Companion army builder will always list the correct type.
Cavalry (25x50mm Bases)
Standard cavalry models sit on 25x50mm rectangular bases. Cavalry rank up 5 models wide for their formation footprint, with the 50mm dimension running front-to-back.
| Unit Size | Models | Footprint (W x D) | LITKO KoW Unit Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Troop | 5 (5 wide x 1 deep) | 125 x 50mm | Shop 125x50mm |
| Regiment | 10 (5 wide x 2 deep) | 125 x 100mm | Shop 125x100mm |
| Horde | 20 (10 wide x 2 deep) | 250 x 100mm | Shop 250x100mm |
Large Infantry / Monstrous Infantry (40mm Bases)
Large Infantry covers bigger models that tower over standard troops—Ogres, Trolls, Elementals, Werewolves, and similar creatures. Each model sits on a 40x40mm square base. Large Infantry formations rank up 3 models wide.
| Unit Size | Models | Footprint (W x D) | LITKO KoW Unit Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regiment | 3 (3 wide x 1 deep) | 120 x 40mm | Shop 120x40mm |
| Horde | 6 (3 wide x 2 deep) | 120 x 80mm | Shop 120x80mm |
Note: Large Infantry does not have Troop or Legion options. The smallest formation is a Regiment of 3, and the largest is a Horde of 6.
Large Cavalry / Monstrous Cavalry (50mm Bases)
Large Cavalry includes mounted monsters and oversized mounts—Drakon Riders, Fleabag Riders on large mounts, and similar heavy hitters. Each model sits on a 50x50mm square base. Like Large Infantry, these formations rank up 3 wide.
| Unit Size | Models | Footprint (W x D) | LITKO KoW Unit Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regiment | 3 (3 wide x 1 deep) | 150 x 50mm | Shop 150x50mm |
| Horde | 6 (3 wide x 2 deep) | 150 x 100mm | Shop 150x100mm |
| Legion | 12 (6 wide x 2 deep) | 300 x 100mm | Custom via BaseMaker |
Chariots (50x100mm Bases)
Chariots use 50x100mm rectangular bases with the 100mm dimension running front-to-back. Chariot formations are among the widest in the game.
| Unit Size | Models | Footprint (W x D) | LITKO KoW Unit Base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Troop | 1 (or 2 side-by-side) | 100 x 100mm | Shop 100mm Square |
| Regiment | 3 | 150 x 100mm | Custom via BaseMaker (also as tray) |
| Horde | 6 | 200 x 100mm | Custom via BaseMaker (also as tray) |
Monsters, Heroes & War Engines
Monsters, heroes, and war engines are typically individual models rather than ranked formations. Their base size is determined by the model itself rather than a formation grid.
| Unit Type | Typical Base | Notes | Shop at LITKO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infantry Hero | 20mm or 25mm square (3rd Ed) / 40mm or 50mm (4th Ed) | 4th Edition moved all infantry heroes to larger bases. Mantic sells adapter rings for 20mm-to-40mm conversion. | Shop 40mm Bases |
| Cavalry Hero | 25x50mm (3rd Ed) / 40mm or 50mm (4th Ed) | Same 4th Edition change applies to mounted heroes. | Shop 50mm Bases |
| Monster | 50x50mm square | Dragons, Greater Elementals, and similar large creatures. Use model's supplied base. | Shop 50mm Bases |
| Titan | 75x75mm square | Giants and other towering models. Height 6 in the rules. Classified as legacy unit type in 4th Ed but base sizes remain valid. | Custom via BaseMaker |
| War Engine | Varies—use supplied base | Catapults, ballistae, cannons. War Engines maintain a 50mm arc of fire regardless of base size. | Custom via BaseMaker |
Multi-Basing: The Heart of Kings of War
If there is one thing that sets Kings of War apart from every other rank-and-file game, it is multi-basing. In KoW, the only thing that matters for gameplay is the unit's footprint—the overall dimensions of the formation base. Individual model positions within that footprint are irrelevant. There are no casualty removals. A unit either exists at full strength or it is destroyed.
This opens up extraordinary hobby opportunities. Instead of gluing 40 identical models to individual bases and cramming them into a movement tray, you can mount 20–30 models on a single horde-sized base and fill the remaining space with scenic terrain, rubble, spell effects, or dynamic posing. The result is a miniature diorama that moves as one piece on the tabletop.
Why Multi-Basing Works
- No casualty removal. Kings of War uses a Nerve mechanic instead of removing individual models. Your unit stays at full visual impact until it routs.
- Fewer models needed. You can use fewer models than the "full" count as long as the base footprint is correct. A horde of 40 infantry can be represented with 25–30 models if they fill the space convincingly.
- Faster setup and gameplay. Moving one base instead of repositioning 40 individual models on a tray speeds up every turn significantly.
- Diorama-quality armies. The extra space on a multi-base lets you create scenic bases that tell a story—a unit charging through ruins, wading across a stream, or holding a defensive line.

LITKO KoW Unit Bases
LITKO manufactures single-piece plywood unit bases in every standard Kings of War formation size. These are not movement trays with individual slots—they are solid flat bases designed for multi-basing. Glue your models directly to the base, add scenic materials, and you have a finished unit ready for the table.
Each LITKO KoW unit base includes a small notch in the leading edge to help identify the front of the unit, regardless of how your models are posed.
LITKO Movement Trays
If you prefer to keep your models on individual bases (for flexibility across multiple game systems), LITKO makes movement trays with cutouts sized for 20mm, 25mm, 40mm, and 50mm square bases, as well as 25x50mm cavalry bases. Move your entire regiment as one piece while keeping the option to pop models out for skirmish games like Vanguard.
LITKO movement trays are available with magnet-ready options—flex steel bottoms that pair with magnetic sheet in your carrying case for secure transport.
Kings of War 4th Edition Base Changes
Kings of War 4th Edition launched in December 2025 and introduced several basing changes. If you are starting a new army or updating an existing one, these are the key differences from 3rd Edition:
| Change | Details |
|---|---|
| Heroes on Larger Bases | All Infantry, Heavy Infantry, and Cavalry heroes now use 40mm or 50mm bases instead of matching their unit type. This gives heroes a larger battlefield presence. Titan heroes remain on their existing larger bases. |
| Heavy Infantry & Titans Reclassified | Heavy Infantry and Titans are now considered "legacy" unit types. Their base sizes remain valid for existing armies, but new units are categorized under the standard types (Infantry, Large Infantry, Monster). Existing Heavy Infantry armies can continue to use their current bases. |
| Large Infantry/Cavalry Progression | Large Infantry and Large Cavalry now follow a standard Troop/Regiment progression rather than the old Regiment/Horde system. Check your 4th Edition army list for exact unit sizes available. |
| Legions Restructured | Legions are no longer a general unit size. They exist as upgrades through certain Commander units. This may affect your multi-base purchases for the largest formation sizes. |
Transition tip: Mantic sells resin base adapter rings to convert 20mm infantry heroes to 40mm bases without rebasing. LITKO also offers 40mm and 50mm square bases in both plywood and clear acrylic if you prefer to rebase cleanly.
Kings of War vs. The Old World: Base Size Comparison
Many players move between Kings of War and Warhammer: The Old World, or bring their old Warhammer Fantasy Battles collections to both systems. The base sizes overlap significantly but are not identical. Here is a comparison to help you plan an army that works for both games.
| Unit Category | Kings of War | The Old World | Compatible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Infantry | 20x20mm (Inf) or 25x25mm (HI) | 25x25mm | KoW Heavy Infantry (25mm) works in both. KoW Infantry (20mm) needs rebasing or adapters for The Old World. |
| Cavalry | 25x50mm | 30x60mm | Not directly compatible. The Old World uses larger cavalry bases. Use adapters or maintain separate bases. |
| Monstrous Infantry | 40x40mm | 40x40mm | Identical. Ogres, Trolls, and similar models work in both games without changes. |
| Monstrous Cavalry | 50x50mm | 50x50mm or 50x75mm | 50mm square models work in both. Some Old World monstrous cavalry uses 50x75mm—check your specific unit. |
| Chariots | 50x100mm | 50x100mm | Identical. Chariots transfer between systems without changes. |
Bottom line: If you want a collection that works in both Kings of War and The Old World, use 25mm square bases for Heavy Infantry and 40mm square bases for large infantry. Cavalry is the main friction point—KoW uses 25x50mm while The Old World uses 30x60mm. LITKO base adapter trays can bridge the gap so you do not need to rebase models.
For a complete breakdown of The Old World basing, see our Warhammer Base Sizes Guide.
Choosing a Base Material
Base material matters more for multi-basing than for individual models, because a horde-sized base (200x80mm or larger) needs to be flat, rigid, and paintable. Here is what LITKO offers:
| Material | Best For | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Plywood | Multi-basing, scenic work, texture and painting | The go-to choice for KoW multi-bases. Easy to prime, paint, flock, and sculpt onto. Warp-resistant microplywood in 3mm thickness. LITKO's KoW-specific unit bases are all plywood. |
| Clear Acrylic | Individual bases, gaming mats, clean display | Transparent, lets your game mat show through. Clean, modern look. Available in 1.5mm and 3mm. Best for individual bases rather than multi-bases (harder to scenic). |
| Magnetic / Flex Steel | Transport, magnetized army cases | LITKO offers peel-and-stick magnetic base bottoms and flexible steel bottoms that pair with magnetic sheets in your carry case. Essential for transporting large multi-bases safely. |
All LITKO bases are precision laser-cut in the USA. For Kings of War, this precision matters—when your regiment base needs to be exactly 100x80mm to fit next to your allied units without gaps, laser-cut accuracy eliminates the guesswork of hand-cut MDF or foam board.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my old Warhammer Fantasy models in Kings of War?
Yes. Kings of War was designed to accommodate existing fantasy miniature collections. If your models are on 25mm square bases, they work for KoW Heavy Infantry units. If they are on 20mm bases, they work for KoW Infantry units. 25x50mm cavalry bases carry straight over. Models on 40mm bases slot directly into Large Infantry. The only adjustment you may need is rebasing heroes if you are playing 4th Edition (heroes now use 40mm or 50mm bases).
What are the regiment base dimensions for 20mm Infantry (Inf)?
A 20mm Infantry (Inf) regiment is 20 models ranked 5 across and 4 deep, creating a 100 x 80mm footprint. That is the dimension of the multi-base or movement tray you need. LITKO sells this as a ready-made KoW unit base.
Do I need the full model count on a multi-base?
No. Kings of War explicitly allows flexible model counts on multi-bases. A horde "of 40" can be represented by 25–30 models with scenic filler. What matters is the footprint dimension, not the exact model count. Most tournament organizers ask that the base "looks like" the appropriate unit size, but they do not count individual models.
What is the difference between a unit base and a movement tray?
A unit base (multi-base) is a single flat piece of material. You glue models directly to it and scenify the surface. This is the most common approach in Kings of War. A movement tray has individual cutouts or lips that hold separately-based models. Movement trays let you remove individual models for other game systems. Both are legal in KoW—it is a hobby preference.
Can I play both Kings of War and The Old World with the same army?
Mostly. Infantry on 25mm square bases and large infantry on 40mm bases are directly compatible between both systems. Cavalry is the sticking point—KoW uses 25x50mm while The Old World uses 30x60mm. The solution is to either keep cavalry on individual bases with game-specific movement trays, or use LITKO base adapter trays to bridge the size difference. See our Warhammer Base Sizes Guide for full Old World details.
What changed for heroes in Kings of War 4th Edition?
In 3rd Edition, infantry heroes used the same base as their unit type (20mm or 25mm). In 4th Edition, all infantry, heavy infantry, and cavalry heroes now use 40mm or 50mm bases. This gives heroes a more commanding presence on the battlefield. Mantic sells resin adapter rings for a quick conversion, and LITKO stocks 40mm and 50mm square bases in multiple materials.
Does base material matter for tournaments?
Tournament organizers care about base dimensions, not material. Clear acrylic, plywood, MDF, and 3D-printed bases are all acceptable as long as they are the correct size. LITKO bases are precision laser-cut to exact millimeter dimensions, which eliminates the sizing inconsistencies you sometimes see with hand-cut alternatives.
