Hobby Paint Rack Guide: Which Rack Fits Your Paints

Picking a paint rack comes down to one measurement: your bottle’s diameter. Dropper bottles — Vallejo®, The Army Painter®, and most 17–18ml lines — are about 26mm across. Citadel® pots need a 34mm hole. Craft-store 2oz bottles need 38mm (1.5″). LITKO laser-cuts a rack for each, in desk-size and 108-bottle Mega formats, plus a mobile caddy that carries paints and brushes to the table. This guide matches your paint brands to the right rack or organizer — and tells you how many you’ll need.

Which Rack Fits Your Paint Brand?

Paint racks are sized by hole diameter, and paint bottles are more standardized than they look — nearly everything a miniature painter owns falls into one of three sizes:

Your paint Bottle Hole size Rack that fits
Vallejo® Model Color (17ml), Game Color & Xpress Color (18ml) 17–18ml dropper 26mm
The Army Painter® Warpaints, Warpaints Fanatic, Speedpaint 18ml dropper 26mm
AK Interactive® 3rd Gen, Scale75®, Reaper® MSP, Two Thin Coats™ 15–17ml dropper 26mm
Citadel® Base, Layer & Dry pots (12ml) — larger Shade and Technical pots fit too, sitting taller Flip-top pot 34mm
Monument® Pro Acryl (too wide for dropper racks at 30.5mm), Formula P3® 22ml / 18ml bottle 34mm
Craft paints — Apple Barrel®, FolkArt®, DecoArt® 2oz bottle 38mm (1.5″)
An “18ml” label doesn’t guarantee a fit — volume isn’t width. The Army Painter’s 18ml droppers are 26mm across and fit the dropper racks; Monument’s Pro Acryl bottles hold about the same paint in a squatter bottle that runs 30.5mm wide and needs the 34mm rack. When in doubt, measure the bottle, not the label.
Own something not on the list? Measure the bottle’s widest point. Under 26mm wide — dropper rack. Under 34mm — 34mm rack. Under 38mm — 2oz craft rack. The holes fit any round bottle narrower than their diameter, whatever the label says.

The honest exceptions: Tamiya® doesn’t fit any of the three — the 10ml minis are square glass jars (square doesn’t seat in a round hole) and the 23ml rounds are 40mm wide; Scale75’s Artist range comes in tubes; and spray cans live on their own shelf. (If you run a Tamiya bench — we hear you; a 40mm rack is on the wishlist.)

The Racks, Size by Size

Every LITKO paint rack is the same idea executed at three hole sizes: tiered, angled shelves laser-cut from MDF in a clear acrylic frame, so every label faces you and the whole collection reads at a glance — while taking up under five inches of desk depth. All of them are freestanding: no wall mounting, no hardware — set the organizer on the desk and load it.

Rack Holds Footprint Best for
Mega Dropper Rack 108 bottles 24″ × 12″ × 4″ Serious Vallejo / Army Painter collections — a hundred paints on one shelf
Standard Dropper Rack 48 bottles 11″ × 11.5″ × 4.75″ A starter collection, or one faction’s palette within arm’s reach
Mega 34mm Rack 70 pots 24″ × 12″ × 4″ The serious Citadel shelf — 70 pots on display
Half 34mm Rack 35 pots 12″ × 12″ × 4″ The Citadel starter shelf
Mega 2oz Craft Rack 48 bottles 24″ × 12″ × 4″ Terrain painters and crafters with big bottles
Standard 2oz Craft Rack 24 bottles 12″ × 12″ × 4″ The craft-paint corner of a hobby desk

How Many Racks Do You Need?

If you’ve ever bought a third bottle of the same red because the first two were somewhere in the shoebox — that’s the problem a rack solves. Count your bottles, add the ones you’re about to buy, and round up — collections only grow. The working math for dropper-bottle painters: a Standard rack holds 48, a Mega holds 108, so two Mega racks shelve a 200-paint collection with room to spare, in just 4 feet of wall-facing desk space. Mixed collection? Most painters end up with a dropper rack for the Vallejo and Army Painter lines plus a 34mm rack for the Citadel pots — the Mega racks share the same 24″ × 12″ × 4″ footprint, so they sit flush side by side.

Restocking while you organize? We carry the paints too: Vallejo, Army Painter Warpaints, Speedpaint, and the full paints & washes range — rack and refills in one order.

The Mobile Paint Caddy

Racks organize the desk; the mobile caddy moves the session. It carries a project’s worth of paint — 15 dropper bottles or 8 larger bottles — plus 18 brushes, upright where they belong, to the kitchen table, the club, or the painting class, and back to the shelf when you’re done.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paint rack fits Vallejo paints?

Vallejo’s paints come in 17–18ml dropper bottles about 25mm across — Model Color is 17ml, Game Color and Xpress Color are 18ml — and they all fit any 26mm dropper-bottle rack. The same racks fit The Army Painter, AK Interactive, Reaper, Scale75 and Two Thin Coats droppers, so a mixed collection lives on one rack.

What paint rack fits Citadel paints?

Citadel’s standard 12ml flip-top pots are about 30mm wide and need a 34mm hole — dropper-bottle racks are too small for them. LITKO’s 34mm racks hold 35 or 70 pots; the larger Shade and Technical pots fit the same holes, sitting a little taller.

How many paint bottles does a paint rack hold?

LITKO’s dropper racks hold 48 (Standard) or 108 (Mega) bottles. The 34mm racks hold 35 or 70 pots, and the 2oz craft racks hold 24 or 48 bottles. All Mega racks measure 24 by 12 inches and sit just 4 inches deep.

How do I know which rack fits my paint bottles?

Measure the bottle at its widest point. Bottles under 26mm wide fit the dropper racks, under 34mm fit the 34mm racks, and under 38mm (1.5 inches) fit the 2oz craft racks. Brand doesn’t matter — only the diameter does.

Will craft store paints fit a hobby paint rack?

Standard 2oz craft bottles — Apple Barrel, FolkArt, DecoArt — are about 1.5 inches across and need the 38mm craft racks. They will not fit dropper-bottle or 34mm racks.

What are LITKO paint racks made of?

Laser-cut MDF shelves in a clear acrylic frame. The shelves are tiered and angled so every label stays visible, and the whole rack is under five inches deep, so it lives at the back of a hobby desk without eating the workspace.
