Star Wars: Legion uses notched round bases in specific sizes. Unlike Warhammer (which uses plain round bases), Legion bases have notches cut into the front and rear edges that align with the movement tool, plus small divots at each 90-degree facing to define fire arcs. Base size matters in Legion—it affects movement, cover, and which terrain a unit can pass through.
This guide covers base sizes for all five Legion factions: Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, Galactic Republic, Separatist Alliance, and Shadow Collective. Each section lists every unit with its correct base size so you can find what you need fast.
LITKO manufactures precision laser-cut bases compatible with Star Wars: Legion in clear acrylic, plywood, and with magnetic or flex-steel bottoms. Our 27mm bases are the most popular Legion upgrade—nearly invisible on the table so your miniatures appear to stand on their own. Star Wars: Legion Base Sizes — Quick Reference Chart
Legion uses seven standard base sizes. Every trooper and vehicle in the game fits one of these categories. The base that came in the box is always the correct one.
Note: Some very large vehicles (AT-TE) use proprietary bases that differ from the standard round sizes above. Check the expansion box for the exact base included with your model.
Rebel Alliance — Unit Base Sizes
The Rebel Alliance fields scrappy infantry, iconic heroes, and a handful of vehicles. Most Rebel units are on 27mm trooper bases.
Galactic Empire — Unit Base Sizes
The Empire brings heavy firepower and armored walkers. The iconic AT-ST is one of the largest models in the game on a 100mm base.
Galactic Republic — Unit Base Sizes
The Republic fields clone troopers in several variants alongside Jedi heroes and a mix of repulsor vehicles and heavy armor.
Separatist Alliance — Unit Base Sizes
The Separatists rely on swarms of cheap droids backed by heavy armor. B1 Battle Droids come in large units—you will need more 27mm bases than any other faction.
Shadow Collective — Unit Base Sizes
The Shadow Collective is a mercenary faction combining Mandalorians, Black Sun enforcers, and Pyke Syndicate foot soldiers. Some Shadow Collective units can also be fielded in Rebel Alliance or Galactic Republic armies.

Vehicles — Bases, Flight Stands, and No-Base Units
Vehicle basing in Star Wars: Legion works differently from infantry. Some vehicles use notched round bases, some use flight stands, and a few very large models have proprietary bases or sit directly on the table.
Vehicles on Notched Bases
Most ground vehicles and walkers come with a notched round base. The notches align with the movement tool for standard moves and lateral strafes.
Repulsor Vehicles on Flight Stands
Repulsor vehicles (speeders, airspeeders, transports) hover above the battlefield. In the game, they use a flight stand that elevates the model above the base. LITKO makes flight stand kits compatible with Legion in clear acrylic, making your vehicles appear to genuinely float above the table.
Tip: Mounted creature units (Tauntaun Riders, Dewback Riders) are classified as Creature Troopers, not vehicles. They use 50mm notched bases and follow trooper movement rules, not vehicle rules.
Notched vs. Non-Notched Bases in Star Wars: Legion
All official Star Wars: Legion bases are notched. This means they have two rectangular cutouts (front and rear) that align with the movement tool, plus small divots at the left and right edges that mark the 90-degree fire arcs.
Why Bases Are Notched
- Movement tool alignment: The front and rear notches accept the jointed movement tool, ensuring consistent and precise movement on every activation.
- Fire arc definition: The four small divots at 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees define the front and rear arcs, which determine what a unit can see and shoot at.
- Strafe movement: Vehicle bases use the side divots for lateral strafe moves.
Can You Use Non-Notched (Plain Round) Bases?
In casual games, most opponents will not mind if you use plain round bases of the correct diameter—especially clear acrylic bases that look great on the table. You can mark fire arcs with a small dot of paint or a line etched into the base.
In official tournaments, the rules state that players must use official components. However, many tournament organizers allow aftermarket bases as long as they are the correct size and have appropriate arc markings. Check your specific event's rules pack before attending.
LITKO's standard round bases (available in 27mm and 50mm) are popular upgrades for casual and league play. For players who want the notched design, LITKO also offers notched bases and notched tank bases designed specifically for Legion. You can also use the LITKO BaseMaker to order custom sizes in any configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Star Wars: Legion bases notched?
Yes. All official Legion bases have notches cut into the front and rear edges. These notches align with the game's jointed movement tool, and small divots at the sides mark the 90-degree fire arcs. The notched design is integral to how movement and facing work in Legion.
Can I use non-notched bases in Star Wars: Legion?
For casual and league play, plain round bases of the correct diameter work fine. Many players prefer clear acrylic bases for the "invisible base" look on themed gaming mats. Just add small markings for fire arcs. For official tournaments, check the event rules—most organizers allow aftermarket bases as long as they match the official size and have arc indicators.
What size base is a Stormtrooper on?
Stormtroopers use the standard 27mm round notched base. This is the same base used by nearly all infantry in Legion, including Rebel Troopers, Clone Troopers, B1 Battle Droids, and all foot characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.
What base size does the AT-ST use?
The AT-ST uses a 100mm round notched base. This is the "huge" size in Legion, also used by the T-47 Airspeeder and the TX-225 Occupier Combat Assault Tank.
What are the biggest bases in Star Wars: Legion?
The largest standard round base is the 150mm notched base, used by heavy tanks like the AAT Trade Federation Battle Tank and the TX-130 Saber-Class Fighter Tank. Some vehicles use even larger proprietary bases—the A-A5 Speeder Truck, for example, uses an elongated pill-shaped base approximately 100x175mm.
How many 27mm bases do I need for a full army?
A standard 800-point Legion army typically has 7 to 13 activations. For trooper-heavy factions like the Separatist Alliance (which fields large B1 droid units of 8+ models each), you might need 40 to 60+ trooper bases. For elite factions like the Empire or Republic, 25 to 40 bases is more typical. LITKO sells 27mm bases in packs of 25.
Does base size affect gameplay in Legion?
Yes. Base size determines a unit's physical footprint, which affects cover (larger bases are harder to hide), movement (the movement tool connects to the base notch), and melee engagement range. Larger-based units also interact differently with terrain—a unit on a 27mm base can fit through gaps that a 100mm-based walker cannot.
